Getting Your Content Into Twinmotion

See how to import your 3D models and assets into Twinmotion.

3D content from commonly used file formats and design applications can be brought into Twinmotion with the Datasmith Exporter plugins, and by importing supported Geometry, Landscape, and Point Cloud files.

Import Methods

3D models and assets can be imported into Twinmotion in the following ways listed below. For information on the type of file formats that can be imported, refer to Supported File Formats.

Direct Link: With the Datasmith Exporter plugins, you can create a Direct Link connection between your design applications and Twinmotion, and then import and synchronize content between your design applications and Twinmotion using the Datasmith Exporter toolbar. You can also import and synchronize several files from multiple applications into one Twinmotion project.

Geometry: Import 3D geometry files in a variety of formats, including .udatasmith files created with the Datasmith Exporter plugins. You can import files one at a time, or import multiple files and multiple file types all at once.

Landscape: Import landscape files to create terrains that you can sculpt and paint in Twinmotion.

Point Cloud: Bring in 3D laser scanned Point Cloud files that support Twinmotion features such as non-realistic rendering styles, collision volumes, shadows and lighting, decals, and section cubes. Multiple Point Cloud files can be imported into one Twinmotion project all at once.

Multiple File Imports

You can import more than one 3D geometry or Point Cloud file at a time. All supported geometry file types, including .udatasmith files created with the Datasmith Exporter plugins, can be imported simultaneously. All supported Point Cloud files can also be imported simultaneously.

Supported File Formats

The table below lists the methods that you can use to import content into Twinmotion, and the file formats and design applications that are supported.

The .glTF and .glB file formats have the following limitations:

  • Animated objects and skeletal animation are not supported.

  • Certain materials with complex shaders, such as frosted glass or sheen, will be converted to default Twinmotion generic materials.

.udatasmith files are created using the Datasmith File Import workflow, which is available for 3ds Max, ArcGIS CityEngine, Archicad, BricsCAD, CET, form•Z, Navisworks, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp Pro, SOLIDWORKS, and Vectorworks.

Landscape

Heightmaps: .r16, .png

Points: .txt, .xyz

Meshes: .skp, .fbx, .obj, .c4d

Direct Link (Datasmith)

Archicad, BricsCAD, CET, Revit, Rhino (including Grasshopper), SketchUp Pro, and Vectorworks.
