Production Designer and Art Director Greg Shaw uses Twinmotion for production design

Production design is a highly creative discipline that involves shaping the visual style of a film, television show, or theater production.

Fusing art, architecture, and narrative, production designers craft a film’s aesthetic through its set, establishing the setting, mood, and tone of the story.

Production design is all about creative exploration: iterating on ideas or testing out new ones as they occur in the moment. That’s why Production Designer and Art Director Greg Shaw has been using Twinmotion to bring his set designs to life.

He’s able to quickly import models from SketchUp before texturing, rendering, and exploring them in VR in Twinmotion. If a concept starts to feel right, he can further explore its potential by creating a storyboard of how the narrative will play out, placing a camera inside the scene and mapping out key shots.

Then, with Twinmotion Cloud, he can share his work with anyone, anywhere—all they need to review and interact with the project is a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a web browser.
Watch the video above for an insight into how Twinmotion can be used for exploring set concepts, storyboarding, and other production design processes.

Twinmotion Quick Start Guide

If you want to start exploring your own ideas in Twinmotion, you can learn the fundamentals of the software in this guide to getting started.

Importing models with Datasmith Direct Links

Greg’s modeling software of choice is SketchUp, and he uses the Datasmith Direct Link feature to import his content into Twinmotion. Any changes he makes to the SketchUp model are synchronized and reflected in his Twinmotion project.

There are Twinmotion Direct Links available for a number of DCC, CAD, and BIM packages, including 3ds Max, Rhino, Revit, SOLIDWORKS, Archicad, Vectorworks, and more. Check out the documentation to learn how it works.

Twinmotion Cloud

As Greg mentions in the video, he uses Twinmotion Cloud to share presentations with stakeholders. Discover how to use Twinmotion Cloud.

Importing projects into Unreal Engine

Once you’ve gone as far as you can in Twinmotion, you can take projects to the next level with Unreal Engine’s modeling tools and post-processing effects. Find out how to use the Datasmith Exporter feature in Twinmotion to save your Twinmotion projects to the uDatasmith format and import them into Unreal Engine.
